FAA Part 142 Training Centers: Simulator-Based Aviation Training
February 9, 2026
FAA Part 142 training centers are certificated facilities specializing in flight simulator and advanced training devices. They serve airline pilots, corporate aviation departments, and military contractors who need recurrent training or type ratings.
How Part 142 Differs from Part 141
Part 141 schools focus on initial certification for student and private pilots. Part 142 training centers primarily serve already-certificated pilots who need:
- Airline initial and recurrent training
- Type rating courses for specific aircraft (B-737, A-320, etc.)
- Initial or recurrent training under FAR Part 121 or 135
- Check airman and simulator instructor training
Full Flight Simulators
Part 142 centers operate Level C and Level D full flight simulators (FFS) — high-fidelity devices that replicate the cockpit of specific aircraft types. Level D sims can substitute for actual aircraft time in type rating training, dramatically reducing costs and scheduling complexity.
Major Providers
Large Part 142 centers like FlightSafety International, CAE, and SimuFlite operate multiple simulator bays worldwide. Many airlines also operate their own Part 142 training centers in-house.
