FAA Part 145 Repair Stations: Certificated Aircraft Maintenance

February 2, 2026

FAA Part 145 repair stations are certificated aircraft maintenance facilities authorized to perform maintenance, preventive maintenance, rebuilding, and alteration on aircraft and aircraft components. Airlines, charter operators, and aircraft owners rely on these facilities to keep aircraft airworthy.

What Part 145 Certification Means

To hold a Part 145 certificate, a facility must:

  • Employ qualified A&P mechanics and supervisors
  • Maintain approved maintenance manuals and procedures
  • Submit to periodic FAA inspections
  • Hold ratings for the specific work they're approved to perform (airframe, powerplant, propeller, avionics, etc.)

Types of Ratings

Repair stations are issued ratings by class — limited, airframe, powerplant, propeller, radio, instrument, and accessory. Some large MRO (maintenance, repair & overhaul) facilities hold all classes; others specialize.

Why It Matters

Only certificated repair stations can sign off return-to-service documentation for air carriers. If you own an aircraft or manage a fleet, verifying a shop's Part 145 certificate is important due diligence.
