Parachute Rigger Certificate: Packing the Last Line of Defense

March 10, 2026

A parachute rigger is an FAA-certificated specialist authorized to inspect, pack, and maintain parachutes used in civil aviation. Every parachute intended for emergency use in a certificated aircraft must be packed and maintained by an FAA-certificated rigger.

Senior vs. Master Rigger

The FAA issues two levels of parachute rigger certificate:

  • Senior Rigger — Can pack and maintain one or more specific types of parachutes (back, chest, seat, or lap)
  • Master Rigger — Can pack and maintain all types; can also fabricate and repair parachutes

Requirements

To earn a Senior Rigger certificate:

  • Pack at least 20 parachutes of the type sought under the supervision of a certificated rigger
  • Pass the FAA parachute rigger knowledge and practical tests

Where Riggers Work

Parachute riggers work at skydiving centers, military support contractors, and aviation facilities. Some work independently as freelance riggers. Browse FAA-certificated parachute riggers on AviationDepth.
