Remote Pilot Certificate: Flying Drones Commercially
January 15, 2026
The Remote Pilot certificate (also called the Part 107 certificate or "drone license") is the FAA credential required for anyone operating an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) commercially in the United States.
Who Needs One
If you fly a drone for any business purpose — real estate photography, construction surveys, film production, agriculture, inspection work — you need a Remote Pilot certificate. Recreational hobby flying has a separate registration requirement but no certificate.
Requirements
- Be at least 16 years old
- Pass the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test (AKT-107) at an approved testing center
- Pass a TSA security screening
- No flight hours required
What It Covers
The Part 107 knowledge test covers airspace classification, weather, FAA regulations for UAS, radio communications, and emergency procedures. Many candidates self-study using free FAA materials or online courses.
